The Christian and Missionary Alliance is an alliance of evangelical believers,
joined together in local churches, committed to fulfilling the Great Commission given by our Lord
Jesus Christ. Matthew 28:19-20 instructs us Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you(IV). We are dedicated to evangelism, discipleship,
and church planting among unreached and responsive peoples worldwide.
In the Beginning...
The Christian and Missionary Alliance began in 1887 as a missionary movement by Dr. Albert Benjamin Simpson,
a Presbyterian pastor originally from Canada. His primary goal was to "take the whole Bible to the whole world".
Simpson believed that Christ was not only his Savior, but also his Sanctifier, through a dramatic spiritual encounter that changed the direction of his life. He also experienced Christ as his Healer after struggling many years with poor health. This was also a time when the Church was rediscovering the truth about Christ's return as our Coming King, and this became the framework of Alliance doctrine, known as the Fourfold Gospel: Christ our Savior, Christ our Sanctifier, Christ our Healer, and Christ our Coming King. Branches became Churches
The early days of the Christian and Missionary Alliance were spent not as a church,
but as non-denominational branches.
These branches were formed to promote the missionary endeavor and a deeper life with Christ. These groups
typically met on Sunday afternoons so that people could attend their denominational worship services on Sunday
mornings. Eventually, these branches began to operate like churches and became the foundation
of the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination.
Today, there are more than 2,000 CMA churches through the United States and over 2 million members worldwide. CMA's strength continues to lie in global outreach -- spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to unbelievers. Learn More
